Our Teaching Philosophy

At Nrityabitan School of Dance, we believe every student has unique potential. Under the personal guidance of Guru Parama Roy Bardhan, our teaching philosophy focuses on individual attention, structured learning, consistent practice, and artistic excellence while preserving the rich traditions of Bharatanatyam.

Understanding Every Student's Learning Needs

Every student's journey begins with a free one-on-one demo and evaluation class to understand their interests, comfort level, existing skills, and any gaps in previous learning. Based on this assessment, we provide honest feedback and recommendations to parents, ensuring each student begins at the most appropriate level.

Personalized Attention and Patient Guidance

We believe every student learns at their own pace. Through individual attention, patience, and encouragement, our Guru carefully understands each student's strengths and areas for improvement, helping them develop confidence, strong foundations, and artistic expertise.

Structured Practice and Regular Assessments

Learning continues beyond the classroom. We provide practice materials and periodic assignments to reinforce classroom lessons. Students are expected to complete and submit their assignments for assessment, allowing us to monitor progress and provide constructive feedback

Regular Stage Performance Opportunities

We strongly believe that stage performances are essential to developing a complete Bharatanatyam dancer. We provide approximately four performance opportunities annually, including our Annual Recital, cultural festivals, and community events, helping students develop confidence, artistic expression, and stage presence

Certified Curriculum and Level Completion

Our teaching follows a structured syllabus aligned with recognized certification standards, ensuring systematic learning and progressive skill development. Each level is completed through defined learning objectives, with parents kept informed and their acknowledgment obtained before students progress to the next level.

Periodic Examinations and Independent Evaluation

We encourage periodic examinations and third-party assessments through recognized cultural and educational organizations. These independent evaluations help measure students' proficiency, validate their learning achievements, and ensure consistent progress throughout their Bharatanatyam journey.

Our Commitment

Our goal is not simply to teach dance steps, but to nurture disciplined, confident, and accomplished
Bharatanatyam dancers through patient guidance, authentic training, regular practice, and meaningful
performance experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

faq1

1. At what age can my child start learning Bharatanatyam?

We welcome children as young as 5 years old. Our Pre-Beginners classes (ages 5-7) introduce young learners to Bharatanatyam through age-appropriate movements, rhythm, coordination, and engaging activities.

2. Do you offer a free demo class?

Absolutely! We offer a free one-on-one demo class with Guru Parama Roy Bardhan to understand the student's
comfort level, previous dance experience, and current learning abilities. This session also allows students to experience our teaching approach and helps us determine the most suitable class group for their learning journey.

3. Does my child need any prior dance experience?

Not at all! Our classes welcome complete beginners as well as students with previous Bharatanatyam training.
Students are guided according to their age, experience, and individual learning abilities.

4. What is the payment process for Bharatanatyam classes?

The first month's tuition, along with a one-time registration fee, must be paid through Zelle at the time of enrollment. If
a student joins in the middle of the month, the first month's tuition will be prorated accordingly. Starting from the
second month, all tuition payments must be made through our PayPal AutoPay system, with automatic payments
scheduled for the 1st day of every month. Enrollment in AutoPay is mandatory to ensure timely and hassle-free
payments.

5. How are students assigned to different class levels?

Students are generally grouped by age, experience, and proficiency. Our Guru, Parama Roy Bardhan, evaluates each
student's foundational skills and readiness to ensure appropriate placement and steady progression.

6. Are online Bharatanatyam classes available?

Currently, we offer in-person classes only. We strongly believe that Bharatanatyam is best learned through direct
interaction between the Guru and the student. In-person training allows for immediate corrections in posture, footwork,
hand gestures, and expressions, while fostering discipline, concentration, and a deeper understanding of the art form.
This traditional approach helps students build strong foundations and develop their skills with greater confidence and
precision.

7. Are makeup classes available for missed sessions?

Yes! We understand that students may occasionally miss classes due to personal commitments or unforeseen circumstances. Makeup classes can be arranged on an alternative date, subject to mutual availability of the student and Guru Parama Roy Bardhan.

8. How much time should students dedicate to Bharatanatyam each week?

We expect students to dedicate approximately 2 hours per week to Bharatanatyam learning and practice. This
includes one hour of guided training with Guru Parama Roy Bardhan, followed by 10 minutes of home practice on
each of the remaining six days. Consistent practice helps students strengthen their techniques, retain what they have
learned, and progress confidently through the curriculum.

9. Will students have opportunities to perform on stage?

Absolutely! We strongly encourage stage performances as an essential part of Bharatanatyam training. We believe
that performing before an audience builds confidence, enhances artistic expression, and develops stage presence.
We provide approximately four performance opportunities each year for all our students, including our Annual Recital
Program, cultural festivals, and community events. These experiences allow every student to showcase their
progress, gain valuable stage experience, and grow as a confident performer.

10. Do you organize an Annual Recital for students?

Absolutely! We organize an Annual Bharatanatyam Recital every year in early December, typically at a local high
school auditorium. This special event provides all our students with an opportunity to showcase their learning, explore
their artistic abilities, and perform on a professional-style stage. We encourage maximum student participation,
allowing every dancer to gain valuable stage experience, build confidence, and celebrate their artistic journey with
family and friends.

11. How long does it take to learn Bharatanatyam?

Our Bharatanatyam curriculum is thoughtfully structured into 7 progressive levels, designed to guide students from
foundational techniques to advanced classical repertoire and artistic expression. The complete curriculum typically
takes 9-10 years to finish, depending on the student's dedication, consistency, and individual progress. Each level
builds upon the previous one, ensuring a strong foundation, technical excellence, and artistic maturity.

12. Can adults join Bharatanatyam classes without previous dance experience?

Absolutely! Our Adults Class (ages 26+) welcomes both beginners and returning dancers. Classes are adapted to individual abilities, allowing adults to explore Bharatanatyam in a supportive and encouraging environment.

13. Can mothers and daughters attend classes together?

We love seeing mothers and daughters share a passion for Bharatanatyam! However, to ensure the best learning experience, we encourage them to attend their respective age-appropriate classes. Children and adults have different learning styles, paces, and training needs. Separate classes allow us to provide focused attention, appropriate guidance, and a structured learning environment, helping both mothers and daughters grow confidently and make the most of their dance journey.

14. Do you offer customized Bharatanatyam lessons?

We appreciate every student's individual interests and enthusiasm for learning Bharatanatyam. However, our school follows a carefully structured curriculum designed to ensure systematic learning, strong classical foundations, and steady artistic progress. All students are expected to follow the established curriculum, and customized lessons or individual topic selections are not offered. This approach helps us maintain consistency, discipline, and the highest standards of classical dance education.

15. Do you offer an Arangetram program?

Yes! We offer guidance and preparation for Arangetram, the traditional debut solo performance that marks an important milestone in a Bharatanatyam dancer's journey. We generally recommend organizing the Arangetram in India, where access to experienced musicians, traditional venues, and other resources can help keep the overall cost more affordable. However, we can also arrange an Arangetram in the USA for families who prefer a local celebration, with a comparatively higher budget. Our Guru, Parama Roy Bardhan, provides artistic guidance and preparation to help students achieve this significant milestone with confidence and excellence.
